One PS - March 2022 Meeting
One PS March 2022
Hello neighbors, the One PS meeting was held this Tuesday night March 8th, and as always your neighborhood representatives from Vista Las Palmas were in attendance. The in person meeting was at the Mizell Center and began with a moment of silence of the memory of those lost during the Pandemic.
Below are the highlights from the meeting so that you can be as fully informed about important issues as is your neighborhood group.
Mayor Lisa Middleton reported that over 35 streets will have the speed limits reduced in addition to changing how speed limits are set. At 10 am on March 24th there will be a media event unveiling a new lower speed limits at a location to be decided.
In terms of vacation rentals, Picasso (a “fractional share ownership model company”) has purchased five houses in Palm Springs, all in the luxury market, to be part of their “fractional share ownership/co-ownership model”. This would exclude them from being subject to the TOT or vacation rental occupancy rules. The city is be looking for ways to regulate and tax this type of operation.
Re: vacation rentals, the city is looking at a good set of data to judge the status of the vacation rentals: e.g. taking a deep look at permits, growth concentration of rentals by neighborhood, number of contracts, hot line reviews, types of calls and type of citations issued. At the March 29th meeting they will review the data options and begin a study session to assess the data, to help decide what changes, if any, will be made to the ordnance.
There is still no decision on the location of the Amazon warehouse North of the I-10, as mentioned last month. Lisa stressed, that even if we lose this, there, will be others such facilities built in the valley.
Justin Clifton the city manager mentioned study sessions and work sessions are planned for March regarding the city budget and capital improvements plan. Justin was asked about the homeless center on the north end of town. The purchase of the property was based on a City council decision, so the navigation center on McCarthy road is likely to go ahead. It’s kind of done deal now.
Tracy Sheldon — Sustainability Officer gave an update on the separate collection of organic waste went into effect statewide on January 1, 2022. Residential organic collection (e.g. food scraps) will begin in Palm Springs on October 1, 2022. New carts will be provided for this separate collection. Any question(s) can be referred to Tracy’s office or PSDS whole will enable collection. Additional information will be available in the April bill from PSDS.
Lt Frank Browning — PSPD. Is the area commander for VLP. He reported on the recently held town hall meetings in each district used to develop top priorities. These are:
Violent crime
Homelessness and
Property crime
The city is eventually looking at having cameras in place in key locations.
Bob Ferran - OnePS Events, solicited volunteers for the upcoming picnic on Saturday March 19. The next volunteer opportunity would be the candidate forum at as yet to be announced date.
Desert Water — Invitations to the next board of directors meeting March 15 will be held virtually at 8am. Comments regarding the new DWA district re-draws are encouraged. Snail mail will be used in the upcoming November elections. DWA.org/divisions for more information.
That’s it for this month’s meeting. We hope you find this informative. Please excuse any mistakes or gaps. We’ll do our best to be accurate and keep you up to speed with news of importance to our city and our neighborhood.
See you next month!
